DIXON – Former Dixon Comptroller Rita Crundwell's legal situation just got worse.

Thursday morning, a Lee County grand jury delivered a staggering 60-count indictment against the 59-year-old Dixon horse breeder and showman.

Each of those state charges accuses her of theft of more than $100,000 in government property, which is a Class X felony punishable by 6 to 30 years in prison.

A prosecutor presents evidence in secret to a grand jury, which determines whether it is sufficent for an indictment. The six-member jury does not determine guilt or innocence.

The indictment comes 5 months after federal prosecutors charged Crundwell with a single count of wire fraud in connection with what they say was the misappropriation of more than $53 million in city funds since 1990.

Lee County State's Attorney Henry Dixon will have a news conference at 1 p.m. today at City Hall to discusss the state charges.

Federal prosecutors say Crundwell funneled money through the city's capital development fund and into a secret account she opened in the city’s name two decades ago.

Since the federal charges were filed, she has been free on a $4,500 recognizance bond...

Rita on Rock Center
If anyone was able to see the segment about her, it was quite interesting. The interview revealed that it didn't bother her that the city of Dixon was hurting. Pool closed, people lost their jobs, etc. and she never blinked an eye and blamed other things for the shortness of money when that went all to her. It also said that the hardest thing for them to do was to look at her everyday, put on a smile and pretend nothing was wrong until the FBI got their info together. The day that they arrested her she acted like she had no clue to what was going on. I think she did but the sickness she has would be par for her actions at the time of arrest.

Stole millons of dollars and then made (by some people's reactions and support) history for being a crook and being a World Champion horse breeder. I think not.

Famous Rita !
I quess we all have different dreams and she did not care how she fulilled hers of being famous & winning in the AQHA World. I have always had to budgit and work my butt off to just own a couple nice mares to AI and breed to Top Studs just to get nice horses and hope we can get to shows with there off spring and will be able to market them to a good home. We must love our horses as I can honestly say not too many times have I seen a profit even with my good show horses after you consider your costs. It is really sad when someone that proubly has no idea what its lke to do it honestly. Too many no what I mean when I say. You sure will be famous now Rita!!! Congratulations!!!!

Rita
A lady who built a horse empire on stolen money. Wow!! And horse people who took her money with entry fees and other expenses.Wow! Horse people are still saying poor Rita. She is a very poor excuse for a person with any values. Just for some of "them there" trophies. How pitiful for horse people.

I would like to know what she has to say about all this. I wonder if she points fingers or owns up to the theft??

I'm just curious how she thought this wouldn't go unnoticed? Seriously, theft of this magnitude to not go noticed is just ludicrous.
