GoHorseShow.com regrets to report that Born Lopin, one of the industry's most accomplished and legendary mares, was euthanized at Texas A&M on May 8 at the age of 23 due to complications with navicular. Born Lopin is one of the greatest producing daughters of Zippo Pine Bar and out of Debbie Jane Face. She is a multiple World Champion producer, both AQHA and APHA, and the dam of offspring earning in excess of $200,000.

"Born Lopin is gone from earth, but never from my heart. Thank you all for sharing and aiding in her position in Quarter Horse history. She was truly full of grace and joy," Joan Schroeder told GoHorseShow.com. "She had such dignity.  When she didn't want to get out of her stall we knew it was time."

Although successful in the show pen earning 57 AQHA points and a Finalist at the 1992 AQHA World Show in Junior Western Pleasure, Born Lopin will forever be remembered as one of the greatest broodmares in AQHA history. She spent the last 15 years owned by Joan Schroeder, and was one of the foundation broodmares at Schroeder Ranch in Gainesville, Texas, home of Blazing Hot.

Born Lopin and Blazing Hot are considered one of the most magical crosses in AQHA history.  These two produced: Born To Be Blazing, 2004 AQHA World Champion Two Year Old Western Pleasure and 2005 All American Quarter Horse Congress Junior Western Pleasure Champion; Hot Lopin Louise, 2005 NSBA Horse of the Year and Congress Champion; Lady Born To Be Hot, Multiple Congress Top Ten placer; Star Born Blazing, Congress Top Ten and World Show qualifier; and, one of her most recent winners, A Slow Burn, 2010 Congress Masters and 2010 AQHA Reserve World Champion Two Year Old Western Pleasure.   

"We hadn't been able to get Lopin in foal for three years but her legacy will continue," Joan said proudly. "Texas A&M was able to get 14 oocytes out of Lopin with Blazing Hot semen and 7 of them matured. We are hoping that at least one of them will take."

Additionally, Joan has Shes Born Special, a 2008 bay mare by Blazing Hot. "Born Special is the last filly out of Lopin," Joan said.  Shes Born Special just had her first baby, a filly by Certain Potential.  "She's Lopin's grand daughter. I so believe in that bloodline and look forward to the future."

"Lopin went out with her ears up and happy," Joan told us. "This was an emotional decision and a tough decision.  But it was the right thing to do."
