Darol Rodrock has acquired yet another top-level horse to add to his already incredible crop and this time it’s a Paint. Rodrock purchased A Scenic Impulse, a 2002 APHA sorrel overo stallion from the MacDonald/Hachtel Partnership (Dave MacDonald and Mike & Gretchen Hachtel). A Scenic Impulse was the Reichert Celebration Champion of the $90,000Color Classic in 2004, and he is already the sire of A Scenic Ocean Drive who was the two year old filly who won the Color Classsic at the 2009 Reichert Celebration.

Amy Gumz who stands two of Rodrock’s other western pleasure stallions, Only in the Moonlite and Certain Potential, has added this outstanding Paint stallion to her group of breeding stallions located at Gumz Farms in Morganfield, Kentucky.

Gumz explained that a few years ago Darol expressed an interest in adding a Paint stallion to his group. "We looked at a few horses but nothing materialized. Then, in conversations with Dave MacDonald and Mike Hachtel, we found out that A Scenic Impulse might be available for purchase,” Gumz said. “We had heard really good things about the horse. It was a long process because the Hachtel’s weren’t crazy about parting with him. He has been a big part of their family for a long time,” Gumz explained. “It took us several weeks, but we finally came to an agreement.”

Gumz added, “We’ve looked at an awful lot of Paint stallions, a lot of stallions in general and A Scenic Impulse combines the qualities that we expect with color. His babies have been really strong, very good in their front leg and an awful lot of pretty." Additionally, Gumz said " I’m really blown away by the color percentage on this horse. Mike Hachtel says he’s been running 85% color. He’s not homozygous and that’s way above what the average should be. His lowest percentage was 70% which is exceptional color."

This talented paint stallion will finish out his breeding season in Kentucky, and Gumz and Rodrock look forward to promoting and advertising him for the 2011 breeding season. “I’m going to encourage people to stay tuned because I’m meeting with Darol in July to try to come up with some new marketing promotions for ASI and knowing Darol, it will be bigger and better than ever!”

Gumz goes on to say that Rodrock is already beginning to knock around some ideas how this horse can be part of the Ride To Riches program which will offer some very strong incentives to the breeders and owners of his offspring. “We will see some pretty strong promotions that we haven’t seen from the Paint horses,” Gumz said.

Karen and Darol Rodrock have been breeding, raising, and exhibiting the American Quarter Horse for over 30 years. The Rodrock’s know pleasure horses, and they are aware that these three stallions offer a tremendous breeding opportunity to many mare owners in the industry.

Rodrock first bought AQHA stallion Only In The Moonlite, then added AQHA leading sire, Certain Potential in October, 2008 giving him two of the finest western pleasure Quarter Horse stallions in the nation. He also bought Dotevita (dam to A Certain Vino) when he purchased Certain. Then, in February, 2010, he added multiple AQHA World Champion producer Cool Lookin Lady to his band of broodmares.

In this transaction, Rodrock also acquired Zippos Irish Lace (dam of A Scenic Ocean Drive) who is a Reserve APHA World Champion, and her full sister who was seventh at the World Show. They rounded out their broodmare band by buying a double registered mare named Stiletto Heels who is one of the leaders in APHA Hunter Under Saddle points.

Gumz said she is excited to see A Scenic Impulse babies go to the next level. Gumz is looking into the possibility of breeding some of Rodrock’s exceptional Quarter horse broodmares to this stallion. “We’re already talking about doing embryos on Cool Lookin Lady and Dotevita. These mares will help add more high quality bloodlines to the paint industry. I think it’s going to be a bright future for this horse and yet another feather in Darol’s cap.”
